2026 Sea Harvest Grommet Games supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture all set the take place at three venues in three Provinces, this weekend
Three regional events will make up the 34th edition of the annual Sea Harvest Grommet Games supported by the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture this year. The three Provincial Grommet Games will take place simultaneously in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KZN this weekend (March 14th & 15th).
These grass roots contests will feature teams made up of boys and girls in the Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, under 14 and Under 16 age groups and will highlight the enormous strides Surfing South Africa has made in creating a platform for young surfers from every community in South Africa.
Muizenberg Pavilion beach will host the Western Cape event and teams from Cape Town Surfriders, Winelands and Eden will participate over the two days of competition
This year Nahoon Beach in East London will see surfers from hosts Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay taking part while teams from eThekwini, Ugu and Ilembe will spend two days surfing at Dairy Beach on the Durban beachfront.
The objective of the annual Grommet Games is to demonstrate Surfing South Africa’s commitment to the transformation & development of the sport at grass roots level and teams must adhere to Surfing South Africa targets and selection criteria.
The most important and overriding focus of the event is the creation of opportunities for young surfers from disadvantaged backgrounds to represent their districts in this unique tournament.
Participation, rather than competition, is the major focus at the Grommet Games.
The format at each Provincial event includes individual heats in each division with all the points produced by every surfer going towards the overall team score
At each venue, the team with the highest total points will win one of the Sea Harvest Team Trophies.
The 2026 Sea Harvest Grommet Games will not only crown champions in each of the divisions at each of the Provincial events, but will also be using the three contests to select surfers to compete in the inaugural Sea Harvest Grommet Games Champion of Champions event which will take place in Muizenberg in the last quarter of 2026.
