Day Two of the 2025 South African Masters Surfing Championship
Presented by the City of Cape Town and supported by SMTH Shapes, Reef Wetsuits, Advanced Health Private Day Hospitals, Jack Black Beer, and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
Long Beach, Kommetjie, Cape Town — Day Two of the 2025 South African Masters Surfing Championship saw slightly smaller swell but excellent early morning conditions. As the tide shifted and sets became infrequent, heats turned into a tactical contest where patience and positioning made all the difference.
Some surfers chose to wait for the bigger sets at their peril, while others decided to scratch for the insiders, with varied results depending on set frequencies and the aforementioned luck factor.
In the Over 40 Men’s Division, Bradd Mommsen (Ugu) delivered one of the standout performances of the day, finding two good waves in the allotted 20 minutes and posting a solid 14.50 points (out of 20) in his Round Two heat for a decisive heat win.
The Over 50 Men’s Quarterfinal Heat Four brought one of the most anticipated clashes of the event — a battle of South African surf legends. Grant “Twiggy” Baker (Ilembe), Frankie Oberholzer (Ugu), Cass Collier (Cape Town Surfriders), and Johan Reyneke (Cape Winelands) went head-to-head in a tightly contested heat.
Collier struck first with sharp wave selection and local insight, while Baker and Oberholzer traded second-place scores. As the clock wound down, Baker found a clean set wave, scoring enough to take the win, with Collier advancing in second. Oberholzer and Reyneke were narrowly eliminated.
“It was challenging out there with the small conditions, but it was cool to be chasing waves with Frank, Cass, and Johan, thirty years down the line,” said Baker afterwards. “Just a pity Frank went out in such small surf. Still, tomorrow looks really good.”

In the Over 35 Women’s Quarterfinals, Tarryn King (Ilembe), Heather Clark (Ugu), and Roxy Davis (Ilembe) were the clear standouts, each finding scoring opportunities despite the inconsistent peaks. Other surfers who stood out in this division were Penny Stemmet (Buffalo City), Bonnie Hanafey (Buffalo City) and Jeannie Holmes (Eden).
