The 2025 Surfing South Africa Masters Championship gets underway tomorrow at Long Beach, Kommetjie. The annual event brings together the country’s leading Masters surfers to compete for both individual and team honours across multiple divisions.
Event Details
What is it?
The Masters Championships is Surfing South Africa’s annual national competition for surfers aged 35 and older. The event features the following divisions: Over 35 Men and Women, Over 40 Men, Over 50 Men, Over 55 Men, Over 60 Men, and Over 65 Men. Competitors represent their respective districts and surf clubs from around the country.
When is it happening?
Competition starts on Friday, 17 October, with an early first call to take advantage of favourable morning conditions. More than 120 surfers have entered, requiring a full three days of heats and finals. The event concludes on Sunday, 19 October, with the crowning of individual and team champions.
Where is it taking place?
The contest will be held at Long Beach, Kommetjie, Cape Town. A strong southwest swell is forecast for the weekend, along with southerly winds and well-formed sandbanks, ideal conditions for the contest. The event will be webcast live on YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

Why is it taking place?
The Masters Championships recognises and celebrates South Africa’s most experienced surfers, many of whom have represented the country at an international level. It provides a platform for ongoing competition and community among generations of surfers.
It is a Surfing South Africa contest, supported by the Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the City of Cape Town, Jack Black Beer, Reef Wetsuits, Advanced Health, and SMTH Shapes.
Competitors and Teams
This year’s field includes past national champions, long-time competitors, and several first-time Masters entrants. Among the confirmed surfers are Heather Clark, Tyrell Johnson, Warwick Heny, Gareth Sepp, David Malherbe, Penny Stemmet, Steve Bredell, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Mike Burness, Peter Lawson, and Sean Holmes.
Defending individual champions include Clinton Gravett, Simon Fish, Greg Emslie, Gareth Sepp, Charlie Reitz, and Mike Burness. The reigning district champion team is Buffalo City.
