Excellent waves were on tap for the opening day of competition at the Rip Curl GromSearch Durban, presented by Sea Harvest. This is the third event in a four-part series taking place across South Africa.

There was a great deal of talk about the swell pounding the north and south coasts. With expectations low that the swell would reach the bay, it was a pleasant surprise to see the waves pouring in through the piers. Surfing South Africa wasted no time in getting the competition going. Throughout the morning, the waves improved with the draining tide, and there were some great waves for the competitors.

Consistent three- to four-foot peaks were delivering at New Pier. There was excellent scoring potential for all contestants. Nathan Tayler was one of the top surfers in the premier U16 men’s division. However, the standout of this division was Loghann Tilsley. He banked a heat total of 14.17. Marcello Zedde was the standout in the U14 Boys quarters. Matt Canning was the top point scorer in the U18 Boys division, with a heat total of 14.26 points. In the competitive U12 Boys division, Ethan Schermbrucker stood out, scoring 13.67 out of a possible 20 points for his heat total. All photos by Dave Lindemann Photography

New Pier Comes Alive

It was great to feel the vibe at the pumphouse as the waves pulsed throughout the morning. Some of the younger surfers were out of their comfort zone, but everyone was giving it their all, charging the overhead set waves. This contest sets the tone for the final Rip Curl GromSearch, which takes place at Seal Point, Cape St Francis, in September.
