MUIZENBERG, SOUTH AFRICA – South African surfer Muizenberg’s Paul Sampson has secured the biggest win of his career, taking first place at the prestigious Africa Surf Tour event in Annise, Cote d’Ivoire. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Muizenberg-based athlete, who has made an incredible journey from a life on the streets to becoming a top-tier professional surfer.
Sampson, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading transformation surfers, has been steadily making a name for himself on the Africa Surf Tour circuit. His latest triumph is a personal achievement and a testament to the growing strength of African surfing on the global stage.
The Africa Surf Tour, organised by the African Surfing Confederation (ASC), was created to give African surfers more opportunities to compete, earn prize money, and gain valuable heat experience. While South African and Moroccan surfers have made it to the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, no other African nations have yet been represented at the highest level of competition. With Africa’s vast coastline offering world-class waves, the ASC is determined to change that narrative.
Growing African Surfing on the Global Stage
In a 2024 interview with Surfer Magazine, ASC President Omar Seye spoke about the organisation’s commitment to developing professional surfing across the continent.
“Our goal is to promote African professional surfing and give our surfers a platform to shine,” said Seye. “There is so much untapped talent here; we have amazing waves. It’s time to showcase Africa as a premier surf destination.”
Sampson’s victory is a significant step in that direction. His inspiring journey from adversity to triumph serves as a beacon of hope for up-and-coming surfers across Africa.
What’s Next?
The next major stop on the Africa Surf Tour is the highly anticipated African Surfing Championships, set to take place in Liberia from May 20-23. The event will unite the best surfers across the continent as they battle for the championship title. With momentum on his side, all eyes will be on Muizenberg’s Paul Sampson to see if he can continue his winning streak.
