News Release

18 July 2024

Victoria Bay, George—The perfect right-hand point break of Victoria Bay will host this weekend’s Sea Harvest Vic Bay GromComp presented by Rip Curl, a SAST event comprising U12, U14, U16, and U18 Boys and Girls divisions.

With a full entry, the event will have three days of surfing at the iconic wave. There is a good forecast of solid waves for the weekend. Spectators can expect loads of entertaining surfing and some action on the point.

There is always some fun at Victoria Bay as it has a notorious paddle-out spot at the top of the point that can result in some hesitant moments when the swell is up. Even more so with spring high tides, which we will experience this weekend. Still, a good spotter watching for sets from the vantage point can usually assist with dry-hair paddle-outs.

You can follow the live heat scores throughout the weekend on Liveheats where you can also find the full weekend’s schedule.

All the top junior surfers in the country will be in attendance to bolster their SAST rankings as we start the second stage of the junior competitive year. Two exceptions will be KZN surfer Matt Canning, the top-ranked U16 surfer, who will be travelling overseas, and Cape Town surfer Cooper Smith, ranked sixth on the U16 rankings, who is currently injured.

Upcoming junior events are the Sea Harvest Cape Crown Presented By Xcel Wetsuits at Long Beach on September 6 – 8, and the Rip Curl GromSearch Seal Point presented by Sea Harvest on September 20- 22. These are the eighth and ninth events on the SAST.

The junior surfing year will culminate in the Sea Harvest SA Junior Championships at Lower Point in JBay from September 24 – 29.

Victoria Bay is a well-liked wave amongst junior surfers, and the high-performance right-handers provide the perfect canvas for these surfers to impress the Surfing South Africa judging panel and win valuable rating points and prize money. The judging criteria are based on speed, power and flow, and judges are always looking for combination moves and progressive surfing.

“Victoria Bay is always a popular contest venue, and Surfing South Africa is stoked to be able to bring the seventh event on the 2024 SA Junior Surf Tour to Vic Bay,” said Surfing South Africa General Manager Robin De Kock.

“We are immensely grateful to our partners Sea Harvest, Rip Curl, the Western Cape Government and George Tourism for making this happen and appreciate the hard work of the team from Eden Surfriders, our hosts. We wish all 120 competitors the best of luck on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
