Contestants in the 2019 Mercedes–Benz South African Surfing Championships hosted by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality were greeted by perfect 6 foot surf at Nahoon Reef on Day Three of this premier Surfing South Africa tournament.
Organisers decided to make the best use of the conditions by adding the Opens Men’s Quarter Finals to the Schedule of events.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz SA Championships hosted by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality not only features 16 heats of competitive surfing at Nahoon Reef tomorrow but also includes an Outreach initiative at neighbouring Nahoon Beach.
This Outreach initiative will involve 35 young surfers from East London community projects Waves 4 Change and Jonginenge who will compete in a fun “tag team” surf contest between 9 am and midday on Saturday.
Support from Mercedes-Benz and Buffalo City has made this initiative possible and participants will not only get to compete against each other under the watchful eyes of their project coaches and mentors, but will also be given the opportunity to watch some of the best surfers in the country in action at Nahoon Reef.
As part of the programme, all the participants will be given breakfast and lunch, provided with equipment by their programmes so that they can compete against each other and all of them will be awarded a commemorative medal acknowledging the fact that they took part on the day.
The event will be coordinated by Surfing South Africa Transformation Director Alvin Mtatshi and he will be supported by SSA Operations Officer Shuan Solomons, SA Champs coordinator Tasha Mentasti and SSA Board member Shirley Fairall.
Members of Surfing South Africa’s Rising Stars will assist with the coaching and adjudication on the day.
The 54th South African Surfing Championships ends with the running of the nine division Finals. The Award Ceremony will be held at Nahoon Reef at approximately 1pm on Sunday
