Saturday March 10th  : In celebration of International Women’s week twenty three girls took to the Muizenberg Corner surf in the 2018 edition of the Girls Summersurf Challenge on Saturday (March 10th).

Although the waves were small there was very little wind and the competitors in the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa supported event produced some competitive scores across the three age divisions.

Summer Sutton got her competitive year off to a good start when she beat good friend and fellow Kommetjie surfer Ceara Knight into second place in the Under 16 Final. Katie Winter, also from Kommetjie, was third and Caroline Brown of Hout Bay took fourth place. All four of these surfers competed in the South African Junior Championships last year.

Melkbosstrand’s Anastasia Venter took honours in the Under 14 Division Final and the Under 12 Final, making her the most successful competitor at the 2018 Summersurf Challenge. She beat Zia Hendricks of Jeffreys Bay into second place in both finals.

Maya Figl and fellow Kommetjie surfer Sarah Scott were third and fourth respectively in the Under 14 Final. Sarah Scott came third in the Under 12 Final and Emma Wise took fourth place.

All 23 surfers at the 2018 Girl’s Summersurf Challenge contest received a Roxy Surf Emporium gift pack and the finalists shared a total of R5000 in prizemoney.

The event was supported by Sport and Recreation South Africa.
